Mr. Roame is the Founder & Managing Partner of Tiburon Strategic Advisors and the Tiburon CEO Summits. He is a leading strategic advisor to 600+ Tiburon members, primarily advising the CEOs, other senior executives, & boards of directors of wealth & investment management (& WealthTech) firms. Mr. Roame has also served as an industry experienced board member for numerous Tiburon members, and currently serves on ten boards. He has served as a board member during periods when the firms signed dozens of substantial joint ventures, took out numerous revolvers & term loans, hired a variety of investment bankers, raised multiple rounds of venture capital, completed dozens of acquisitions, completed initial & secondary public offerings, and sold selves to both sponsors and strategic acquirers. Mr. Roame has negotiated CEO & board compensation plans, navigated multiple name founder & other CEO transitions, and worked through the sudden death of a CEO. He has monitored financial, cybersecurity, & public relations risks. He is a past and/or present board vice chairman and chairman of numerous strategy, human resources & compensation, and nominating & governance committees, and he is a qualified audit committee lead director.

Mr. Roame has responsibility for all of Tiburon's research, marketing, service, & advisory activities which keeps him on the leading-edge of strategic initiatives in the industry's fastest growing businesses - registered investment companies (open-end mutual funds & exchange traded funds (ETFs)), personalized (direct) indexing, managed accounts & managed account programs, private markets, cryptocurrencies (digital assets), structured products, values-based investing (sustainable investing (ESG)), financial, tax, & estate planning, annuities & life insurance, discount & online brokerage, break-away brokers, the independent advisor markets, wealth management marketing & LeadGen strategies, wealth management technology & outsourcing strategies (including turnkey asset management programs (TAMPs)), and wealth manager succession planning & acquisitions strategies. Mr. Roame has been the host and keynote speaker at the semi-annual Tiburon CEO Summits since their inception in 2001, a frequent speaker at Tiburon's weekly Tiburon Webinars, and a co-author of over 3,100 Tiburon Written Research topics & profiles.

Independent Board Roles

Mr. Roame is frequently sought as a board member by Tiburon members. He presently serves on the following eleven boards:

  • Edelman Financial Engines: One of largest fee-based financial advisors (RIAs), with approximately 1.4 million accounts and $290 billion AUM backed by Hellman & Friedman and Warburg Pincus. Mr. Roame was also a board member under the prior ownership of both Lee Equity Partners and Sanders Morris Harris Group.
  • Facet Wealth (DBA Facet): A leading hybrid digital advice provider, serving 18,000+ clients with a CFP-led virtual financial planning offering billed on a subscription fee basis backed by Warburg Pincus, Durable Capital Partners, and Slow Ventures. Mr. Roame was the first outside board member, having joined before the series A capital raise. Facet has now raised $165 million through its Series C. He is the chairman of the compensation & talent committee.
  • Apex Fintech Solutions: A leading $150 billion AUA technology-oriented custody & clearing broker backed by Peak6 Group. First outside board member, having joined board when firm filed S1 offering document.
  • Allspring Group Holdings (DBA Allspring Global Investments) (FKA Wells Fargo Asset Management): The approximately $500 billion AUM spin-off of Wells Fargo Asset Management from Wells Fargo & Company backed by GTCR and Reverence Capital Partners. Mr. Roame joined the board immediately upon closing, having participated in the transaction due diligence process on behalf of GTCR. He is a member of the audit & risk committee.
  • Foundation Source Philanthropic Services (DBA Foundation Source): The leading provider of SaaS-based foundation management services (and other related services) backed by GTCR. Mr. Roame joined the board immediately upon closing, having participated in the transaction due diligence process on behalf of GTCR.
  • DPL Financial Partners: The leading no-load annuities & insurance marketplace. Mr. Roame was the second independent board member of this firm backed by $61 million from Eldridge Industries and Atlas Merchant Bank, having joined the board after the Series B capital raise. Chairman of compensation committee.
  • Vise Technologies (Advisory Board): A leading technology-driven personal portfolios investment management firm. Mr. Roame joined the advisory board of this firm backed by $128 million from Sequoia Capital, Bling Capital, Founders Fund, and other investors.
  • SoraFinance (Advisory Board): A leading financial advisor-oriented debt management platform. Mr. Roame joined the advisory board of this firm backed by $4 million from New Era Capital Partners, Peterson Ventures, and other investors.
  • Halo Investing (Advisory Board): A leading structured products marketplace. Mr. Roame joined the advisory board of this firm backed by $115 million from Koch Industries, Abu Dhabi Catalyst, and other investors.
  • Paanini (DBA Jiffy.ai) (Advisory Board): A leading robotic process automation (RPA) firm. Mr. Roame joined the advisory board of this firm backed by $71 million from Eight Roads Ventures, Reaction Fund, Rebright Partners, and other investors.
  • SA Funds: A 1940 Act open-end mutual fund family sponsored by Focus Financial Partners' portfolio company Buckingham Strategic Partners and employing Dimensional Fund Advisors as its sole sub-advisor. Mr. Roame serves as the chairman of the nominating & governance committee and a member of the audit committee.

Previous Experience

Prior to forming Tiburon in 1998, Mr. Roame served in similar capacities, first as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company, and later as a business strategist at The Charles Schwab Corporation. Mr. Roame was also previously the vice chairman of Envestnet (NYSE: ENV), from its initial public offering (IPO) in 2011 until 2020, where he served as chairman of the strategy and nominating & governance committees, and as a member of the audit and information technology committees.

Philanthropic & Community Activities

Mr. Roame is the co-leader of the Tiburon Impact Adventures, building homes for less privileged families in Mexico. He is also the co-leader of Skip & Chip's Excellent Adventures, a community of outdoor-oriented industry colleagues.

Personal Information

Mr. Roame is a native of Detroit, MI and a graduate of the University of Michigan (MBA) and now lives in Belvedere, CA, less than a mile from the firm's main office. Along with his focus on wealth & investment management (& WealthTech), Mr. Roame is published broadly on world affairs, and in the hospitality and wine & spirits industries.
