Tiburon Research Reports

Tiburon Strategic Advisors has created a series of research reports to help educate its clients in a low-cost way on a wide variety of topics in the brokerage, investments, private banking, & wealth management markets. The majority of Tiburon's research reports are written for executives at financial institutions; a few reports are written specifically for financial advisors. The financial institutions series contains macro-industry reports that cover topics such as the mutual funds industry, the hedge funds industry, the full-service brokerage firms industry, and the fee-based financial advisors industry. Reports in the financial advisors series are more tactical, including topics such as Fee-Based Financial Advisor (RIA) Benchmarking & Best Practices and Trends in Succession Planning, Firm Valuations, & the Growing Acquisition Market for Financial Advisors.

These ~300-400+ page reports follow an easy-to-digest format while providing detailed facts and analysis that aid in the development of an understanding of leading product areas and market segments, including market histories, recent developments, leading firm rankings, & future predictions. Tiburon attempts to position its reports as reference documents, and not as short-term newsworthy editorials. While Tiburon has been repeatedly told that its research reports are worth much more, they are priced at just $5,000 each because Tiburon believes that the information should be shared widely and that sharing the research will lead to market research & strategy consulting projects over time. Research reports are sent immediately via web links. Bound copies can be printed and mailed for $10,000 each. Tiburon plans to continually update these reports and publish additional reports in the future; please let the firm know if there are topics that you desire to see covered.

If you are interested in purchasing any of Tiburon's research reports, please click here to Order A Research Report online. And for those clients needing more customization and two-way discussions, please see Tiburon's Market Seminars service and feel free to design a custom market seminar to suit your needs.

Tiburon Research Report Access Program

At the suggestion of numerous Tiburon clients, Tiburon created a client service allowing unlimited access to all of its research reports for all of a firm's employees for an entire calendar year for only $25,000. This service has helped dozens of Tiburon clients to consolidate their research needs & budgets.

Tiburon's research report series is currently made up of 58 reports (with the potential of another 70+ coming soon as the firm aims to develop a family of 132 core research reports). In other words, Tiburon’s research report writing strategy is to ultimately write and continuously refine a family of research reports covering every substantial financial services industry market segment so that the reports can then serve as a comprehensive library of financial services data, analysis, & opinions for Tiburon clients. Tiburon's Research Report Access Program allows companies to utilize the Tiburon research library web page as their personal industry knowledge library across all of their employees for one fixed cost. Presently, the firm attempts to publish one additional research report each week. Many are simply updates but all lead us closer to our goal of a family of 132 comprehensive reports. We hope to have our comprehensive library built within a year or two. Over time, Tiburon will grow the family of reports, refine the content, make the reports more usable, further the embedded profiles of all Tiburon clients, make the report content more easily searchable, and provide subscribers with usage tracking, all for no additional charge.

Tiburon Research Process

Readers should find Tiburon research reports to be both comprehensive and unbiased in their opinions. Tiburon is not a narrowly defined research firm and does not necessarily seek to earn substantial revenues selling research reports (all Tiburon reports are offered for sale at $5,000 each, which comes nowhere close to even covering the time invested). Instead, Tiburon conducts extremely detailed research to support critical, strategic consulting assignments for its financial services industry clients. As part of Tiburon’s traditional consulting efforts, before focusing on customized client analyses and to get thoroughly immersed in a business segment, Tiburon typically conducts more than a half-dozen research steps:

  • Summarize & organize recent industry media coverage
  • Incorporate proprietary learnings from Tiburon’s benchmarking tools
  • Review & incorporate learnings from all key industry firms’ web sites
  • Conduct detailed news searches to round out company views
  • Seek out research & analyst reports to compare and further develop findings
  • Solicit opinions from Tiburon’s executive program members
  • Interview industry participants to confirm or revise findings

The core of all Tiburon research reports is the body of the report, typically offering some historical lessons, a thorough understanding of the current status of the topic, and a series of predictions for the future of the market. A typical Tiburon research report outline could have these sections:

  • Market History
  • Market Definition
  • Market Growth
  • Key Issues
  • Leading Firms
  • Market Segmentation
  • Distribution Opportunities and/or Product Usage
  • Future Predictions
  • Appendix I - Key Participant Firm Profiles
  • Appendix II - Key Service Provider Firm Profiles

Due to some client requests (and to add additional depth to its reports), Tiburon typically includes an appendix to each research report, whereby it incorporates profiles of leading firms (and service providers) in the defined market. These profiles will vary widely in depth & timeliness, as this research is conducted outside of the research report writing process. In other words, most Tiburon reports will be relatively comprehensive in their coverage of current events but may have some gaps in company profiles. Tiburon clients will necessarily have more in-depth profiles than non-clients.

Tiburon updates its research reports periodically depending on the evolution of each market and the demand for such, so the firm welcomes readers to share any feedback, input, or ideas by email or mail. In accordance with Tiburon's traditional research process, future versions of Tiburon research reports will attempt to take their research further, including developing more detailed profiles of each firm and incorporating more opinions from other industry observers that can help further explain the conclusions.

Tiburon Research Report Access Program - 2010 Planned Initiatives

Tiburon's Research Report Access Program allows Tiburon clients to utilize the Tiburon research library web page as their personal industry knowledge library across all of their employees. Tiburon's 2010 planned efforts are as follows:

  • Grow the Family of Research Reports: Tiburon's objective is to write and continuously refine a family of 132 core research reports, covering every substantial financial services industry segment. The firm will publish at least twenty new reports in 2010.
  • Refine the Content within the Current Research Reports: Some of Tiburon's research reports are in initial draft form. Others are lumpy, with some detailed sections and others not so. Tiburon recognizes this and published these initial drafts for clients who can benefit from such. In 2010, Tiburon will seek to unify the quality of the content across all of its research reports.
  • Make Tiburon's Research Reports More Usable: Tiburon will soon introduce a series of new Research Report Access Program web pages, allowing subscribers to access each report's table of contents, key findings, executive summary, full report, & even underlying PowerPoint slides. The goal is to help Tiburon clients to quickly & efficiently access the most highly valued information from any report without requiring one to pursue increasingly encyclopedic reports.
  • Further the Embedded Profiles of Tiburon Clients Across All Reports: Tiburon seeks to have each of its clients update their Tiburon profiles annually. These profiles are embedded in the reports. Tiburon's goal is accurate and timely coverage, especially of its clients.
  • Develop Tiburon Research Report Search Capabilities: Tiburon Research Report Access Program subscribers will soon have the ability to search through Tiburon research reports looking for topics of interest such as mutual fund use, break-away brokers, TAMPs, mergers & acquisitions trends, or nearly any other industry phrase. This is intended to make the growing library more useful to all.
  • Develop Tiburon Research Report Library Access Tracking: Tiburon will provide each Tiburon Research Report Access Program subscriber with a unique password starting in 2010. This higher level of security will also allow Tiburon to track and report back on clients' employees' usage.

Tiburon Personal Consultations Policy

Tiburon is unable to address follow-up questions as part of the price of purchasing Tiburon research reports. Tiburon necessarily had to create this policy to maintain fairness to its core clients as well as the purchasers of incremental reports under development. Simply said, because Tiburon offers its reports for sale at just $5,000, the firm is unable to keep research managers dedicated to individual topics. Hence, at the point in which research report purchasers may have questions, the research manager is likely conducting research on a far different topic. Repeatedly pulling research managers off client assignments and/or current research reports under development to look back at other reports would be both cumbersome and unfair to the clients and/or purchasers of the new reports, and Tiburon would necessarily need to increase the cost of its reports.

That said, in response to numerous requests to engage in discussion & debate regarding various topics, Tiburon has developed a market seminar service whereby a Tiburon principal and the lead research manager on any Tiburon research report will present such report, answer questions, and brainstorm the implications of such in a half day visit with a client's executives. The price of a market seminar is $15,000 - $20,000 plus travel expenses. Hence a market seminar is intended to be the best Tiburon service for clients seeking both a written report and the opportunity to address questions to Tiburon executives. Please contact Sarah Sage at SSage@TiburonAdvisors.Com or 415-789-2540 to schedule a market seminar.

Tiburon Sponsored Research Reports

Numerous Tiburon clients have sponsored research reports ($35,000), which entitles them to widely distribute the reports to their own institutional clients, non-captive financial advisors, or end-clients. Tiburon also retains the rights to offer these reports for sale.

Tiburon Research Report Refund Policy

Periodically (far less than 1% of the time after thousands of purchases), Tiburon research report purchasers have sought refunds, which has caused hardship and wasted time for Tiburon, hence the following policy now exists for all Tiburon research report purchases. Tiburon is unable to make any financial refunds for reports. Both fulfilling reports and processing refunds take up Tiburon time, and given that the reports are written as a low cost accommodation service, Tiburon needs to manage its time well, prioritizing market research & strategy consulting clients. Furthermore, given that research reports are delivered via the web, returns are impractical. If it helps, Tiburon will attempt to send replacement reports (either the next version of the same report or another report all together) as long as invoices are paid promptly under the terms of the original order (net 30 days). That said, please observe three suggestions before ordering any Tiburon research report:

  • First, be sure to look at the summaries and attached table of contents for the report(s) of interest. These are created by Tiburon research managers to best represent the reports to potential purchasers. Sending specific pages is time consuming and unreasonable but the detailed table of contents shows pretty clearly the topics covered.
  • Second, please ensure that no other executive at your firm has ordered the same report; Tiburon is willing to allow the internal sharing of its reports by purchasers, but purchasers need to take responsibility to confirm any prior purchase within their firms as the growing complexity of financial services firms makes it impractical for Tiburon to track any firm's subsidiaries and their respective purchases.
  • Finally, please remember that the totality of the report is the offering. If there is a graph that is unreadable because of the smaller font size required for printing, please bring it to the firm's attention and a full-size version will be sent, but please do not seek a refund on a report purchase that you have received.

Consumer Wealth, Liquidation, & the Retirement Income Challenge: The Impact of the Credit Crisis & the Decline in Home Equity

BEST SELLER!!! RECENTLY RELEASED!!!

Date Published: September 2009
198 Pages

The purpose of this report is to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the vast amount of consumer wealth, the perceived Baby Boomer savings crisis (or retirement income challenge), and Baby Boomers’ likely pending liquidation. The report outlines the numbers of consumers & consumer households, summarizes their financial concerns & savings goals, and analyzes the case made for Baby Boomers’ perceived savings crisis, including the decline in pension plans, the challenges of Social Security & Medicare, and the low consumer savings rate. The report also addresses the key pending liquidation, whereby Baby Boomers will likely roll over retirement plan balances, cash in stock options & restricted shares, downsize houses, and sell private businesses. This is the fourth draft of Tiburon’s research on this topic.

Tiburon’s first draft of this report was published in 2005; that draft consolidated prior Tiburon research into one report and was combined with Tiburon’s financial advisor sales & marketing research report. It outlined the number of consumers, their wealth, potential target markets, and sales & marketing strategies.

Tiburon’s second draft of this report was published in 2007; that draft was unbundled from Tiburon’s equally good financial advisor sales & marketing research report. That version also updated all of the consumer wealth data using the first quarter 2007 Federal Reserve Flow of Funds report and outlined Tiburon’s refined views on the perceived savings crisis and the pending liquidation.

Tiburon’s third draft of this report was published in 2008; that draft updated all of the consumer wealth data using the fourth quarter 2007 Federal Reserve Flow of Funds report, tightened the storyline, incorporated substantially more specific analyses, and fleshed out the specific challenge posed by the decline in the stock market and Baby Boomers’ home equity.

This is Tiburon’s fourth draft of this report; this draft updates all of the consumer wealth data using the fourth quarter 2008 Federal Reserve Flow of Funds report and also streamlines the appendix.

This is Tiburon’s second draft of this report; this draft includes improvements to the report’s introduction, a revised synopsis of the key driving factors, and a tightening of the appendix to form a section on institutional markets service providers.

An Initial Overview of the Mutual Funds Industry

RECENTLY RELEASED!!!

Date Published: July 2009
1,390 Pages

The purpose of this report is to provide readers with an initial understanding of the $12.0 trillion mutual funds industry. The report addresses the market’s history, growth, and key issues, as well as trends in product development (e.g., target date funds, socially responsible funds, mutual funds with hedge fund strategies), pricing parameters (e.g., share classes, mutual fund wrap programs, performance fees), and distribution channels (e.g., wirehouses, mutual fund supermarkets, fee-based financial advisors, independent reps, international markets). This is the third draft of Tiburon’s research on this topic.

Tiburon’s first draft of this report was published in 2005; that draft consolidated prior Tiburon research into one report.

Tiburon’s second draft of this report was published in 2007; that draft focused on fleshing out the market history chapter, incorporating research from other Tiburon research reports, and adding significant detail to the appendix profiles of the 300 relatively smaller mutual fund companies.

This is Tiburon’s third draft of this report; this draft focuses on tightening the storyline, enhancing the market history chapter, establishing & updating core industry charts, and enhancing the profiles of some core Tiburon clients, including City National Corporation (Charter Funds), Fidelity Investments, Franklin Resources, Invesco, Natixis (Looms Sayles Funds), & The Charles Schwab Corporation (Schwab Funds & Laudus Funds). This draft also includes updates to the profiles of Ameriprise Financial (J&W Seligman), Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (High Mark Capital), Neuberger Berman, Power Corporation of Canada (Putnam Investments), Sutton Place Associates (Forward Funds), & Wells Fargo Corporation (Evergreen Investments) due to industry developments.

Separately Managed Accounts & Other Packaged Fee-Account Programs: Recasting a Growing Industry

RECENTLY RELEASED!!! BEST SELLER!!!

Date Published: December 2009
1,896 Pages

The purpose of this report is to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the packaged fee-account programs market, including both separately managed account programs and other fee-account programs. No individual trend across the financial advisor channels is as profound as the shift away from commission brokerage towards the eight types of fee-account programs: fee-based brokerage accounts, broker wrap accounts, mutual fund wrap accounts, annuity wrap accounts, ETF wrap accounts, multiple style portfolios, separately managed accounts, & unified managed accounts. This comprehensive report should serve as a bible for any existing or new participant in this market; it includes statistics on the leading players, details of each market segment, highlights of innovations in the four components of fee-account programs, & predictions for the future. This is the fifth draft of Tiburon’s research on this topic.

Tiburon’s first draft of this report was published in 2001; that draft consolidated prior Tiburon research into one report and was focused narrowly on the emergence of independent fee-account programs, now often called turnkey asset management programs (TAMPs). This was only an emerging segment at the time, and that draft sought to organize that emerging business.

Tiburon’s second draft of this report was published in 2002; that draft addressed the death of the business-to-consumer separately managed account programs that had arisen in the web craze of the late 1990s, and the rapid emergence of the new breed of platform-oriented turnkey asset management programs, led by Envestnet Asset Management and Advisor Port.

Tiburon’s third draft of this report was published in 2005; that draft expanded its focus on the dominant programs of the wirehouses and regional brokerage firms.

Tiburon’s fourth draft of this report was published in 2007; that draft put separately managed accounts and the other seven types of packaged fee-accounts into their proper context within the industry, namely alongside the other more traditional fee-based investment management services provided by fee-based financial advisors (RIAs) and bank trust officers. That draft also sought to offer a comparison of traditional separately managed account programs with the twin trends towards multiple style portfolios and unified managed account programs.

This is Tiburon’s fifth draft of this report; this draft better aligns this report’s structure with that of other Tiburon research reports, fleshes out the market history of fee-account programs (e.g., developments around the Merrill Lynch rule), and refines some other storyline points. This draft also includes enhancements to the profiles of some core Tiburon clients, including Advisor Software, DST Systems, Dunham & Associates, Envestnet Asset Management, Fiserv Corporation (Fiserv Investment Services), My Vest Corporation, Morningstar, Northwestern Mutual Life, Russell Investment Group, & SEI Investments.
