Tiburon Conference Speech Details & Fees

A typical Tiburon speech lasts from one-to-two hours and is supported by 40-60+ PowerPoint slides. Tiburon is happy to share its slides with audience members. Speeches are billed at the day rate of the lead Tiburon consultant who delivers the speech. Speaking fees are $15,000-$20,000 for Tiburon's managing principal, $7,500-$10,000 for its consulting fellows & financial advisor roundtable members, and $3,500-$5,000 for its research managers, plus travel expenses for two. Sometimes two Tiburon consultants attend speeches to manage logistics and deliver the highest quality content; other times, Tiburon speakers invite companions to make required work travel less burdensome.

Trade Group & Discount Policy

Tiburon's principals and research managers are in high demand for conference speeches, so the firm does not discount its fees except in unusual circumstances. By far, the most prevalent example of Tiburon discounting is when its consultants speak for non-profit organizations. Tiburon recognizes the limited funds of non-profit trade groups and wants to contribute to the industry. As an effort in this regard, Tiburon is willing to waive its traditional speaking fees and deliver non-profit trade group speeches for any stipend (for instance, stipends have ranged from $500 to $10,000 for Tiburon's managing principal), plus travel expenses as described elsewhere on this page. Better yet, many trade groups find members to sponsor Tiburon's speeches at its regular fees. Unfortunately, Tiburon must decline speech requests if travel expenses cannot be covered in their entirety along with at least some stipend.

The only other examples of discounting are when Tiburon principals or research managers are engaged to speak on the same topic multiple times over a series of days (saves Tiburon preparation time) and/or when engaged to speak on the same day on different topics (saves Tiburon travel time).

Speakers Bureau Policy

Tiburon is flattered by the attention from dozens of speakers bureaus that have sought to represent its managing principal, fellows, and research managers as speakers. That said, the firm has not found that it saves much in the way of preparation in such instances. As a result, Tiburon's speakers bureau policy is that it needs to net the greater of the minimum fee for each specific speaker (e.g., $15,000 for Tiburon's managing principal) or 75% of the amount charged to the ultimate client, along with travel expenses as described elsewhere on this page.

Cancellation Policy

Due to a few late cancellations after materials had been prepared or other speeches passed upon, Tiburon has been forced to create a cancellation policy which goes into effect as soon as a date is held for a conference.  Any speech cancelled after holding a date, will be billed at the entire speaking fee plus any pre-booked travel expenses.

Travel Policy

Tiburon's principals & their companions fly first class (business class when available on entire route) and its research and market managers fly coach class from San Francisco, CA.

Broad Industry Speeches

The Future of Advice

MOST FREQUENT CONFERENCE SPEECH REQUEST!!! RECENTLY UPDATED!!!

Both industry executives and financial advisors need a forum in which to understand the big picture - the key changes taking place across the industry; this topic is the answer to this need. Tiburon consultants constantly sift through all Tiburon research to gather the most compelling trends and these are shared in this presentation.

If given today, a Tiburon consultant would address the wide variety of short-term challenges in the market, would highlight the strategies of key competitors, and would address the evolving role of financial advisors.  Specifically, Tiburon speakers would argue that wealth is substantial in the US and that demographics suggest that the industry should grow rapidly over the decades to come. But the emerging affluent are changing and this will cause advisors and firms to need to change. Key trends to be highlighted include fee-accounts, alternative investments, and wealth management.

Depending on the audience, Tiburon speakers can also address the needed changes for advisors or financial services companies more broadly. Who will deliver advice? How will it be delivered?  What sales & marketing techniques will work? What technology products will be the key enablers? All of these and other issues can be covered in this broad industry overview.

This speech can be delivered by Tiburon Managing Principal Chip Roame, Senior Research Manager Matthew McGraw, and Consulting Fellow Paul Schaeffer.

A Comprehensive Overview of Fee-Accounts, Turnkey Asset Management Programs (TAMPs), & the Booming Separately Managed Accounts Market

FREQUENT CONFERENCE SPEECH REQUEST!!! RECENTLY UPDATED!!!

Fee-accounts broadly (and separately managed accounts more narrowly) were introduced in 1978 by EF Hutton, which subsequently became Shearson Lehman and then part of Smith Barney. At the time of their introduction, fee-accounts were quite simple - clients who traditionally paid commissions every time they purchased stocks or bonds would now have money managers who would make the investment decisions and implement them through brokers all wrapped into one fee. The concept caught on and today there are four types of fee-account programs:

  • Separately Managed Accounts. This was the traditional type of fee-account program whereby one or more money managers are chosen to manage the client account
  • Mutual Fund Wrap Accounts. These came to the brokerage industry in the mid-1990s and allowed brokers to offer their customers no-load mutual funds in a fee-account structure
  • Broker Wraps. These are the products that allow brokers to function as the money manager themselves for a fee
  • Fee-Based Brokerage Accounts. These fee-accounts, developed in response to the growth in online trading, allow customers to stay in control of their accounts while paying a set fee; these accounts avoid fiduciary responsibility and have recently fallen under scrutiny

But where are the assets and where is the growth? One of these four types of fee-accounts has more assets than the other three combined. Which is it? What is next for fee-account programs? Will separately managed accounts catch on in the independent advisor channels? Will MSPs or UMAs be the home run? Will program sponsors add alternative investment products? Will broader segments of baby boomers adopt separate accounts like they previously did mutual funds? Tiburon has recently completed substantial research on the fee-accounts market and can address it from nearly any angle; this is an excellent presentation for executives at firms building fee-account programs, for advisors building fee-account businesses, and for money managers selling their money management capabilities into these programs.

This speech can be delivered by Tiburon Managing Principal Chip Roame, Research Manager Polly Products, and Consulting Fellows Dennis Clark, Kevin Malone, Barry Mendelson, & Bob Padgette.

A Comprehensive Overview of the Market-Linked Products Industry, Including Index Separate Accounts, Index Mutual Funds, & Exchange Traded Funds

One of the hottest trends in the industry is exchange traded funds (ETFs) and indexing. Firms such as Barclay's, State Street, and Vanguard are out in front. Other firms like DFA, Rydex, and Pro Funds are developing more advanced products. In any case, exchange traded funds & index funds are hot. This speech predicts their future.

This speech can be delivered by Tiburon Managing Principal Chip Roame and Research Manager Polly Products, Financial Advisor Roundtable member Tom Lydon, and Consulting Fellows Tim Armour, Jim Atkinson, & Paul Schaeffer.

A Comprehensive Overview of the Hedge Funds Industry

FREQUENT CONFERENCE SPEECH REQUEST!!!

The hedge funds industry weathered numerous storms in the late 1990s, including the closure of several leading firms such as Tiger Management, Long-Term Capital Management, and Soros. However, all the while, hedge funds continued to grow, and an impressive hedge funds-of-funds business emerged. Subsequently, the market volatility of 2000-2003 pointed many firms in the direction of hedge funds and hedge funds grew even quicker. Performance in 2004-2005 has now provided a set-back. Are you struggling with your firm's hedge funds strategy? Do you understand the four key types of hedge funds? Do you need a distribution strategy to serve your high net worth customers' needs? This speech explains the four types of hedge funds, identifies the leading managers of both funds and funds-of-funds, and outlines successful strategies for distribution into the high net worth market.

This speech can be delivered by Tiburon Managing Principal Chip Roame and Research Manager Polly Products.

A Comprehensive Overview of the Venture Capital & Private Equity Industry

Throughout the late 1980s, the private equity funds industry boomed. Who can forget RJR Nabisco and other well-known LBO deals? The funds invested in these LBOs came from what are known as private equity funds. More recently, in the late 1990s, the industry saw a boom in the venture capital market. Start up companies with limited revenues, and often no products, raised significant funds. These monies came from venture capital funds. In the late 1990s, increasingly both private equity funds and venture capital funds became available to high net worth investors but then the venture capital market fell apart and fund raising slowed significantly. It is now coming back! What is an appropriate offering to deliver to high net worth investors? Who are the leading private equity and venture capital fund firms? What is the role of funds-of-funds? How do you build an appropriate product offering for your clientele? This speech delivers a comprehensive understanding of the private equity and venture capital market.

This speech can be delivered by Tiburon Managing Principal Chip Roame and Research Manager Polly Products.

A Comprehensive Overview of the Real Estate Investments Industry

Real estate is one of the oldest investments in the US. Many American households have the majority of their net worth tied up in their own homes. A few Americans own vacation homes and others own rental properties. But, how does one systematize and institutionalize real estate investing across a client base? A wide variety of products from limited partnerships to real estate investment trusts (REITs) to private funds exist. Some players, like ING, raise substantial funds on a regular basis from both institutional and high net worth investors. Other real estate investments are also utilized in the institutional market; investments such as agricultural land and timberland are often packaged and sold to institutional investors. What are the right products for your clients? What methods of packaging make the most sense? This speech provides an overview of the real estate investments industry.

This speech can be delivered by Tiburon Managing Principal Chip Roame and Research Manager Polly Products.

Independent Broker/Dealer Life Insurance Offerings

UNIQUE CONTENT!!!

Life insurance has historically been at one end or the other in the offers of independent broker/dealers. Some independent broker/dealers are owned by life insurance companies and their reps are traditional life agents. But for a much broader segment of independent reps, life insurance products can be a difficult discussion to have with clients, and as a result, many independent advisors have stayed away from insurance. But, increasingly, life insurance products are becoming critical to the foundation of comprehensive financial plans and the wealth management trend. Independent broker/dealers, in turn, have been trying to solve the life insurance business for several years now, and few firms seem to have gotten it quite right. What are the life insurance offerings of the independent broker/dealers? Which products are growing? Which customers buy which products? This presentation provides an overview of the life insurance offerings of independent broker/dealers. Also see Tiburon's broader report on estate planning & charitable giving.

This speech can be delivered by Tiburon Managing Principal Chip Roame and Research Manager Polly Products.

Back to the Future: The Re-Emergence of the Online Financial Services Industry

In the late 1990s, the online financial services market was booming; some spoke of online brokerage displacing all full-service stockbrokers. While the first online trade was executed just a decade ago in 1994, the online financial services industry has seen a big run up and a subsequent repositioning. The key question is what happens if the market slowdown of 2000-2005 reverses itself? Will consumers flock back to the web? Will day trading become the US national pastime once again? Or is the basis of the web now more about empowering consumers to track accounts and empowering advisors to serve consumers? What is the difference in strategy between Charles Schwab, Fidelity Investments, E*Trade, and TD Ameritrade? What does the future hold for the online financial services industry? This is an excellent presentation for executives evaluating their online brokerage & investments strategies.

FREQUENT CONFERENCE SPEECH REQUEST!!!

The latest trend in the financial planning & investment management market has been the influx of CPAs, EAs, and other tax professionals entering the business. CPA firms have been pushed by the declining economics of the tax business and the unfavorable press of the audit business. And CPA firms have been pulled by the economic possibilities of serving the financial planning & investment management needs of their existing client bases. Is this a big potential trend? Absolutely! Taking CPAs alone, there are approximately 40,000 firms and 460,000 CPAs. A small minority of these CPAs work at the 20 largest firms. The vast majority work as sole practitioners and at other small firms. How are these firms entering the financial planning & investment management business? Are they registering as reps? Are they becoming RIAs? Do they utilize services of TAMPs? What are the five key models of how CPA firms are entering the business?  Which firms have been successful? Which vendors have the best partnering offers? This is a terrific presentation for CPA firms themselves and executives at firms hoping to serve CPA firms.
