Tiburon January Research Report Releases

Tiburon is pleased to announce its January research report releases, which include ten new, updated, and/or revised research reports, bringing Tiburon’s research report library to 48 increasingly comprehensive reports across an increasingly wide set of product & market areas. Two of the best reports are those that address the markets for Independent Reps & Independent Broker/Dealers and for Fee-Based Financial Advisors (RIAs). Given the recent issues and consolidations at the wirehouses, many are predicting big moves (likely too big) to the twin independent channels. LPL is becoming a formidable competitor in the IBD channel with over 11,000 reps and Schwab's RIA flows now far outdistance those at any of the wirehouses. In any case, these two reports serve as comprehensive reviews of those two markets.

Tiburon also took steps to refine several other Tiburon reports, including its reports on Key Driving Factors, Venture Capital & Private Equity, Retail Banks, and Financial Advisor Benchmarking & Best Practices. All of these reports provide various levels of detail and all will be pushed towards comprehensiveness next year. To learn more, click here.

Below are summaries of the two most comprehensive reports in this cycle:

An Initial Overview of the Independent Reps &
Independent Broker/Dealers
Markets

The purpose of this report is to provide readers with an initial overview of the independent reps & independent broker/dealers markets, which is a booming market of over 90,000 series seven registered reps who own their own businesses and utilize independent broker/dealers such as LPL Financial Services, Raymond James, Royal Alliance, FNIC, Securities America, & Commonwealth Financial Network. This is Tiburon’s third draft of this report.

This version brings this report into alignment with other Tiburon research reports, fleshes out its market history chapter, incorporates recent Tiburon research on rep recruiting, begins to reconcile the list of independent broker/dealers, and enhances the profiles of some core Tiburon clients, including Cambridge Investment Research, Commonwealth Financial Network, LPL Financial Services, & Securian Financial Group.

An Initial Overview of the
Fee-Based Financial Advisors (RIAs) Market

The purpose of this report is to provide readers with an initial overview of the fee-based financial advisors (RIAs) market, the fastest growing financial services distribution channel. The report goes to painstaking efforts to define this market, which is often improperly defined and measured by others. This is Tiburon's second draft of this report.

The objective here was to flesh out the market history chapter, develop a framework for properly measuring the industry, incorporate some recent Tiburon research on fee-based financial advisors’ use of technology, and enhance the profiles of the three leading custodians - The Charles Schwab Corporation, Fidelity Investments, & TD Ameritrade - as well as several smaller custodians, including Orion Advisor Services, Shareholder Services Group, & Trust Company of America.

An Overview of Tiburon Research

Tiburon’s research report writing strategy is to build a family of 100+ research reports covering every substantial financial services industry market segment so that the reports can then serve as a comprehensive library of financial services industry data, analysis, & opinions for Tiburon clients. Presently, we are on a cycle to release new reports every sixty days and will release more reports on (or near) March 1, so stay tuned! Tiburon aims to have its initially designed comprehensive library built within about twelve-to-eighteen months, at which time we will continuously refine those reports and expand into new areas as suggested by research report access program subscribers.
