******************************************************************************* Tiburon July Research Reports Tiburon Strategic Advisors, a market research & strategy consulting firm serving a wide variety of financial institutions and investment managers, is pleased to announce its July research report releases, increasing Tiburon’s library of research reports to 42 reports. Every two months, Tiburon releases at least one research report that provide relatively comprehensive top-down overviews of specific product or service areas, markets & distribution channels, financial advisor issues, and/or strategic corporate issues. These new reports generally have thoughtful storylines, accurate & up-to-date data, and growing appendices (profiles of industry competitors). In this cycle, Tiburon is pleased to release new comprehensive research reports addressing:
Along with publishing the more comprehensive reports above, Tiburon also regularly seeks to publish initial versions and/or make minor updates to existing reports so as to create something to build upon and/or to make existing reports more useful to Tiburon clients. While these versions may lack the comprehensiveness of other Tiburon research reports, they may be useful to select Tiburon clients. For instance some clients utilize select parts such as a history chapter or a company’s profile. Many of these reports will be more comprehensively addressed later this year. By way of this email, Tiburon is also releasing an additional eight initial and/or updated Tiburon reports:
Consumer Wealth, Liquidation, & the Retirement Income Challenge: The Impact of the Credit Crisis & the Decline in Home Equity The purpose of this report is to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the vast amount of consumer wealth, the perceived baby boomer savings crisis (or retirement income challenge), and baby boomers’ likely pending liquidation. The report outlines the numbers of consumers & consumer households, summarizes their financial concerns & savings goals, and analyzes the case made for baby boomers’ perceived savings crisis, including the decline in pension plans, the Social Security & Medicare industry’s challenges, and the low consumer savings rate. The report also addresses the key pending liquidation, whereby baby boomers will likely roll over retirement plan balances, cash in stock options & restricted shares, downsize houses, and sell private businesses. This is the fourth draft of Tiburon’s research on this topic; at this point, it is fairly well developed. Tiburon’s first draft of this report was published in 2005. That draft was combined with Tiburon’s financial advisor sales & marketing research report. It outlined the number of consumers, their wealth, potential target markets, and sales & marketing strategies. The second draft of this report was published in 2007; it was unbundled from Tiburon’s equally good financial advisor sales & marketing research report. That version updated all of consumer wealth data using the first quarter 2007 Federal Reserve Flow of Funds report. That version also outlined Tiburon’s refined views on the perceived savings crisis and the pending liquidation. The third draft of this report was published in 2008; it updated all of the consumer wealth data using the fourth quarter 2007 Federal Reserve Flow of Funds report, fleshed out the specific challenge posed by the decline in baby boomers’ home equity, and incorporated dozens of useful analyses, as well as tightening the storyline. This is Tiburon’s fourth draft of this report. This draft incorporates substantially more specific analyses, including analyses of consumers, consumer households, and private business sales. Separately Managed Accounts & Other Packaged Fee-Account Programs: Recasting a Growing Industry The purpose of this report is to detail the heretofore rapid emergence of the packaged fee-accounts market, and predict both the future size of this market and its upcoming key developments. This comprehensive report should serve as a bible for any existing or new participant in the separately managed accounts or other fee-accounts business. No individual trend is as profound as the shift away from commission brokerage towards the eight types of fee-account programs: fee-based brokerage accounts, broker wrap accounts, mutual fund wrap accounts, annuity wrap accounts, ETF wrap accounts, multiple style portfolios, separately managed accounts, and unified managed accounts. This comprehensive report includes statistics on the leading players, details of each market segment, highlights of innovations in the four components of fee-accounts, and predictions for the future. This is a must read for firms participating in the fee-accounts market! This is the fifth draft of Tiburon’s research on this topic; at this point, it is fairly well developed. Tiburon’s first draft of this report was published in 2001; that version focused narrowly on the emergence of independent fee-account programs, now often called turnkey asset management programs (TAMPs). This was only an emerging segment at the time, and that draft sought to organize that emerging business. The second draft of this report, published in 2002, expanded the focus of the report to also cover the death of business-to-consumer separately managed account models, and the rapid emergence of the new breed of platform-oriented turnkey asset management programs, led by Envestnet and Advisor Port. The third draft of this report, published in 2005, expanded its focus on the dominant programs of the wirehouses and regional brokerage firms. The fourth draft of this report, published in 2007, sought to put separately managed accounts and the other seven types of packaged fee-accounts into their proper context within the industry, namely alongside the other more traditional fee-based investment services long provided by fee-only financial advisors (RIAs) and bank trust officers, tried to offer a comparison of traditional separately managed account programs and the emerging newer program type called multiple style portfolios, expanded the industry’s view of what is popularly (and correctly) perceived to be the industry’s eventual panacea the unified managed account, and highlighted the best opportunities for TAMPs, enablers, and money managers. The fifth draft of this report was written in early 2008; that draft focused on addressing numerous recent industry developments (e.g., those around the Merrill Lynch rule), expanding the status of the eight types of packaged fee-accounts such as unified managed accounts, as well as lesser covered versions like annuity wrap programs, and reconciling managers lists to develop a more comprehensive manager appendix. In addition, that draft also revisited future predictions and drew new and/or strengthen old predictions. This is the sixth draft of this report. This version sought to better align this report with other Tiburon reports and flesh out the history of separately managed accounts & other fee-account programs. Tiburon Research Reports Tiburon has created its series of research reports to help educate its clients in a low-cost way on a wide variety of topics in the brokerage, investments, private banking, and wealth management markets. The majority of Tiburon's research reports are written for executives at financial institutions; a few reports are written specifically for financial advisors. The financial institutions series contains macro-industry reports that cover topics such as the mutual funds industry, the hedge funds industry, the full-service brokerage firms industry, and the fee-only financial advisors industry. Reports in the financial advisors series are more tactical, including topics such as A Comprehensive Overview of Product Usage, Business Models, & Best Practices of Fee-Only Financial Advisors, and Trends in Succession Planning, Firm Valuations, & the Acquisition Market for Financial Advisors. These ~300-400 page reports follow an easy-to-digest format while providing detailed facts and analysis that aid in the development of an understanding of leading product areas and market segments, including recent developments, competitor rankings, and leading competitors' strategies. The firm attempts to position its reports as reference documents, and not as short-term newsworthy editorials. While Tiburon has been repeatedly told that its research reports are worth much more, they are priced at just $5,000 each because Tiburon believes that the information should be shared widely and that sharing the research will lead to market research & strategy consulting projects over time. Reports can be sent immediately as PDF documents electronically. Bound copies can be printed and mailed for an additional $1,000 each. Tiburon plans to continually update these reports and publish additional reports in the future; please let the firm know if there are topics that you desire to see covered.
