  • Institutional Mergers & Acquisitions

Along with publishing the more comprehensive reports above, Tiburon also regularly seeks to publish initial versions and/or make minor updates to existing reports so as to create something to build upon and /or to make existing reports more useful to Tiburon clients. While these versions may lack the comprehensiveness of other Tiburon research reports, they may be useful to select Tiburon clients. For instance some clients utilize select parts such as a history chapter or a company’s profile of some reports. Many of these reports will be more comprehensively addressed later this year. By way of this email, Tiburon is also releasing an additional nine initial and/or updated Tiburon reports:

  • Hedge Funds
  • Real Estate
  • Wine Investment
  • Upscale Channels Markets (e.g., Private Trust Companies, Boutique Brokerage Firms)
  • CPAs & Tax Pros Market
  • Europe, Middle East, & Africa Markets
  • Asia Pacific Markets
  • Management Consulting
  • Strategic Frameworks

Fee-Only Financial Advisors (RIAs) Market

The purpose of this report is to provide readers with an initial overview of the fee-only financial advisors (RIAs) industry, the fastest growing distribution channel. This is Tiburon's second effort at putting its views regarding this unmeasured but widely speculated market into a single report.

Tiburon’s first draft of this report was published in 2007. That version was developed by summarizing existing Tiburon research.

This is Tiburon’s second draft of this report. The objective here was to further develop the storyline and tighten the profiles of the leading custodians.

Financial Advisor Mergers & Acquisitions

The purpose of this report is to address succession planning, firm valuations, & the growing acquisition market for financial advisory businesses. While this topic has become quite popular throughout the industry, little reliable and consistent market data exists because many transactions take place between related parties and because most acquirers do not disclose the terms of individual transactions. As a result, Tiburon’s primary objective was to summarize a common set of facts for all market participants. If your firm is for sale or if you are seeking to acquire an advisory firm, this report is a great reference. This is the fourth draft of this report, with each version getting more comprehensive.

The first draft of this report was written in 1999. That draft compiled existing Tiburon research on this topic.

The second draft of this report was written in 2001. That draft added significantly to Tiburon’s conclusions.

The third draft of this report was written in 2005. That draft addressed all aspects of this growing trend. It started by offering a synopsis of the succession planning issue for financial advisors and introducing the four phases of buyers. The report then introduced the seven key steps to success and discusses firm valuations, utilizing a host of examples from throughout the industry. Finally, that draft report defined seven winning strategies.

This is the fourth draft of this report. The objectives here were to coordinate this report with Tiburon’s equally good Financial Advisor Benchmarking & Best Practices report and to incorporate new industry learnings.

Institutional Mergers & Acquisitions

The purpose of this report is to summarize the rapid consolidation taking place in the banking, brokerage, and insurance industries. Over the past decade, Glass Steagall has fallen and the financial services industry has picked up its mergers & acquisitions trend. Banks have acquired other banks, brokerage firms, and asset managers. Insurance companies have acquired other insurance companies, independent broker/dealers, and asset managers. Full-service brokerage firms have acquired other full-service brokerage firms and asset managers. And asset managers have acquired one another. With all this activity, what is left? Lots! This report profiles the enormous number of transactions that have taken place and lays the groundwork for the expected consolidation over the coming decade. The acquisition market continues to evolve and data still seems to be analyzed in silos. As a result, Tiburon’s primary objective was to bring a common set of facts to all market participants.

Tiburon’s first draft of this report was written in 2005 primarily by summarizing previously completed research.

This is Tiburon’s second draft of this report; it was written in 2008 by both coordinating the prior findings of this report with Tiburon’s banking, brokerage, and insurance industry reports, and conducting substantial new research.

Tiburon Research Reports

Tiburon has created its series of research reports to help educate its clients in a low-cost way on a wide variety of topics in the brokerage, investments, private banking, and wealth management markets. The majority of Tiburon's research reports are written for executives at financial institutions; a few reports are written specifically for financial advisors. The financial institutions series contains macro-industry reports that cover topics such as the mutual funds industry, the hedge funds industry, the full-service brokerage firms industry, and the fee-only financial advisors industry. Reports in the financial advisors series are more tactical, including topics such as A Comprehensive Overview of Product Usage, Business Models, & Best Practices of Fee-Only Financial Advisors, and Trends in Succession Planning, Firm Valuations, & the Acquisition Market for Financial Advisors.

These ~300-400 page reports follow an easy-to-digest format while providing detailed facts and analysis that aid in the development of an understanding of leading product areas and market segments, including recent developments, competitor rankings, and leading competitors' strategies. The firm attempts to position its reports as reference documents, and not as short-term newsworthy editorials. While Tiburon has been repeatedly told that its research reports are worth much more, they are priced at just $5,000 each because Tiburon believes that the information should be shared widely and that sharing the research will lead to market research & strategy consulting projects over time.

Reports can be sent immediately as PDF documents electronically. Bound copies can be printed and mailed for an additional $1,000 each. Tiburon plans to continually update these reports and publish additional reports in the future; please let the firm know if there are topics that you desire to see covered.
