Tiburon CEO Summit XIV Tiburon Strategic Advisors, a market research & strategy consulting firm serving a wide variety of financial institutions and investment managers, hosts a series of client-only CEO conferences called the Tiburon CEO Summits. The next CEO Summit will be held April 10-11, 2008 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in New York, NY. Mike Byrum (President, Rydex Investments)
Mike Byrum is President of Rydex Investments and oversees the portfolio management, research, and trading within the company. Mr. Byrum is also the chairman of the Rydex Investment Strategy Committee, which determines investment policy for all Rydex products. Mr. Byrum oversees all Rydex business lines, including mutual funds, exchange traded funds, the firms broker-dealer, Rydex Financial Services. In addition, he is instrumental in product development and management across the firm. Mr. Byrum leads the alternatives strategies development team at Rydex, which seeks to conceptualize and shape new alternative strategy products to maintain Rydex’s position as an industry innovator. Mr. Byrum was part of the original Rydex investment team when the company was founded in 1993. He was the inaugural manager of many of the Rydex funds. Prior to joining Rydex Investments, Mr. Byrum served in a brokerage capacity with Money Management Associates, the registered investment advisor to Rushmore Funds. Mr. Byrum is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Washington. Mr. Byrum will address industry trends with regards to several product innovations, including exchange traded funds, leverage funds, and inverse funds. Joe Deitch is the CEO of Commonwealth Financial Network, which he founded in 1979 to create an open and supportive environment where professionals could be true to themselves (and to their clients), follow their dreams, and grow to their hearts content. Mr. Deitch has strived to maintain the original vision of providing indispensable service and cultivating a supportive environment where all affiliated professionals can thrive. Prior to founding the Commonwealth Financial Network, Mr. Deitch worked with Mass Indemnity and New England Life. Mr. Deitch also founded the Cambridge Group in 1978 to provide sophisticated financial planning for affluent individuals. Mr. Deitch has been featured in several industry magazines over the years and has spoken extensively to financial services professionals on topics of leadership, practice management, marketing, and strategic planning. John Hailer is the CEO of Natixis Global Asset Management and is responsible for the overall strategic development of the firm’s investment management and distribution businesses. He manages the company’s assets and assists in building distribution architecture that provides access to the investment capabilities of the firm’s affiliated managers across a range of investment platforms. Under Mr. Hailer's leadership, IXIS Asset Management Advisors Group (the predecessor to Natixis Global Asset Management in the US) increased its assets under management by more than $70 billion from $7.4 billion to $77 billion and built a transparent distribution architecture that provides access to the investment capabilities of the firm’s affiliated managers across a range of investment platforms. Prior to joining Natixis, Mr. Hailer was with Fidelity Investments Institutional Services Company, where he was responsible for new business development in North America and Latin America, directing product and marketing development for institutional channels. Prior to joining Fidelity, he was the director of retail business development for Putnam Investments. Mr. Hailer currently serves on the Board of Trustees at Beloit College. He is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Home for Little Wanderers, the oldest continuous children's charity in the United States. Mr. Hailer will address global opportunities through deeper partnerships and innovative products. He will also review the rethinking of business models with a look at organizing towards innovation. John Murphy is the CEO of Oppenheimer Funds, a role he assumed in 2000, overseeing more than $260 billion across multiple investment strategies. Mr. Murphy is responsible for overseeing the growth of the company beyond traditional mutual funds, and expanding the company’s product and service offerings with the acquisitions provided by Tremont Capital Management. In addition, Mr. Murphy oversees the company’s attempt to bring hedge funds to retail investors. Mr. Murphy is also the President and a board member of the Oppenheimer Acquisition Corporation. Prior to joining Oppenheimer Funds, Mr. Murphy led various businesses for Mass Mutual including its 401k, defined benefit, annuity, international, and trust businesses. His customer-centric philosophy and direct approach were instrumental in increasing sales by six times in less than four years. Mr. Murphy started his career with Arthur Andersen & Company before becoming one of the eight original founders of Liberty Financial Companies. Mr. Murphy was a recipient of New York’s Governor’s Committee on Scholastic Achievement Man of the Year Award. Mr. Murphy is an avid supporter of the Oppenheimer Funds mentor program and the pursuit of higher education. Mr. Murphy was selected to serve on the Board of Directors for Project Rebirth, a non-profit organization dedicated to documenting the momentous rebuilding of the World Trade Center site and emotional recovery of people affected by 9/11. Mr. Murphy is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Investment Company Institute and serves as a delegate to the Financial Services Roundtable. Bob Pozen is the chairman of MFS Investment Management established the first mutual fund in the US in 1924. Today, MFS Investment Management, a subsidiary of Sun Life Financial of Canada, has more than $169 billion in assets under management, offering a wide range of products and services to investors, including more than 70 mutual funds, fixed and variable annuities, separately managed accounts, & retirement plans to retail customers, institutional investors, & insurance offerings. The firm has 15 offices worldwide, 2,400 employees, and more than five million shareholders. Prior to joining MFS Investment Management, Mr. Pozen was vice chairman of Fidelity Investments and president of Fidelity Management & Research Company. Mr. Pozen also brought his expertise from working in the banking & securities law and the financial industry to the White House Commission to strengthen social security. Mr. Pozen has also been a partner at the Washington, DC law firm of Caplin & Drysdale, where he led the banking and securities department. Mr. Pozen currently teaches graduate courses in law and business at Harvard University. Ron Ryan is the CEO and founder of Ryan ALM, which is focused on solving asset/liability problems through a disciplined structured systems, including custom liability indexes, liability beta portfolio, & portable alpha (liability hedge fund). Mr. Ryan is responsible for overseeing and analyzing the Treasury’s and developing indexes specific to them. Mr. Ryan is the creator of the first daily fixed-income indexes; the Lehman US Treasury indexes. Prior to founding Ryan ALM, Mr. Ryan served as director of research at Lehman Brothers where he designed the Lehman Aggregate, the Lehman Government/Corporate index as well as 60 other sector indices. Mr. Ryan also founded The Ryan Financial Strategy Group, which was dedicated to helping money managers outperform bond indices and understand complicated bond math. He also founded Ryan Labs, which was dedicated to solving problems through quantitative solutions. Mr. Ryan will address the pension crisis and the need to align assets to specific liabilities. Michael Steinhardt is the Chairman of Wisdom Tree Investments, which offers dividend and earnings-based index funds rather than traditional index funds based on market capitalization. Mr. Steinhardt oversees the company’s investments, strategy developments and the managing of hedge funds. Prior to joining Wisdom Tree Investments, Mr. Steinhardt founded Steinhardt, Fine, Berkowitz & Company in 1967. Steinhardt, Fine, Berkowitz & Company achieved a performance track record that still stands out on Wall Street: 24% compound average annual returns more than double the S&P 500 over a 28-year period, accomplished through short-term strategic trading, including stocks, bonds, long and short options, currencies and time horizons ranging from 30 minutes to 30 days. Mr. Steinhardt will address his views on the state of the hedge fund industry as well as how and why he started his hedge fund and how and why he eventually closed it.
