The purpose of this report is to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the online financial services industry, from online investing, to banking & bill pay, to mortgages, and to insurance. The catalyst of this report’s publication is simple: online financial services in 2006 are undergoing a renaissance. Online only offers thought to be dinosaurs of another time are springing up, including such online only banking behemoths as ING Direct. Apart from traditional facts & figures and the unique, overreaching strategic conclusions that make Tiburon reports uniquely just those on online investors, bankers, et al, this report will cover the cutting edge peripheral strategies of leading firms. Namely, this report addresses the leading online brokerage firms’ strategies on branch expansion, advisor custody & referrals, banking, and other businesses that have emerged as a crucial ingredient to the profitability formula of the revived industry. The report will begin by addressing the four phases of history in the online financial services industry. This historical account will be followed by an industry-by-industry account of the numbers, strategies, and economics of the leaders in each individual online financial service, with a heavy emphasis towards online investing. It will pit the dominant Big Five firms (The Charles Schwab Corporation, Fidelity Investments, TD Ameritrade, E*Trade, and Scottrade) against one another, and often against the other 45 or so firms that while relatively insignificant round out the competitive playing field. The report will conclude with Tiburon’s predictions for the future of the online financial services industry, which will present opportunity for online financial services competitors, full-service firms, and other interested parties within the industries that will need to understand the re-emergence of online firms. It will be Tiburon's third effort at putting its views of the past, present, and future of the online financial services industry into a single report.
Tiburon’s first draft of this report was written in 2000; that version focused primary on developing an organized structure for reviewing the online financial services industry and establishing profiles of the hundreds of complex online financial service companies.
Tiburon’s second draft of this report was written in 2006; that version updated many of the findings since the internet revolution faded.
This third draft of this report focused on tightening the storyline, coordinating it with findings from other Tiburon research reports, and adding substantial detail to a handful of appendix company profiles. The online financial services industry over the past six years has been drastically reconfigured. Due to forced consolidation, most notably in the online brokerage world, online financial services companies have gone about revamping their offers.
