New Tiburon Research Reports Tiburon Strategic Advisors, a market research & strategy consulting firm serving a wide variety of financial institutions and investment managers, is pleased to announce the release of four updated research reports on the Consumer Wealth, Life Risks & Insurance Products, Target Markets & Marketing Strategies, and Real Estate and its first draft of its State of Investment Management Business, Competition & Advice, and Other Alternative Investments. All seven of these reports provide comprehensive overviews for industry executives seeking a historical top down perspective on these products or services, their markets & distribution channels, and future predictions for their respective industries.
Consumer Wealth Liquefaction, & the Retirement Income Challenge The purpose of this report is to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the vast amount of consumer wealth, the perceived baby boomer savings crisis or retirement income challenge, and the likely pending liquefaction. The report outlines the numbers of consumers and consumer households, and outlines their savings goals & objectives. Furthermore, the report analyzes the case made for baby boomers’ perceived savings crisis, including the decline in pension plans, the social security industry’s challenges, and the low consumer savings rate. And the report also addresses the key pending liquefaction, whereby baby boomers will likely roll over retirement plan balances, cash in stock options, downsize houses, and sell small businesses. Tiburon’s first draft of this report was published in 2005. That draft was combined with Tiburon’s target markets & marketing strategies report. It outlined consumers, their wealth, potential target markets, and marketing strategies. This second draft of this report was written in 2007; it is now unbundled from Tiburon’s equally good target markets & marketing strategies report. This version updates all of consumer wealth data using the first quarter 2007 Federal Reserve Flow of Funds report. This version also outlines Tiburon’s refined views on the perceived savings crisis and the pending liquefaction, through dozens of useful analyzes and hundreds of charts and graphs. A Comprehensive Overview of the Insurance Products Industry, Including Health Insurance, Disability Insurance, Long-Term Care Insurance, Property & Casualty Insurance, Annuities, & Life Insurance The purpose of this report is to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the vast number of insurance products, many used by consumers to protect themselves from various life risks. The report addresses health insurance, disability insurance, long-term care insurance, property & casualty insurance, annuities, and life insurance. Another Tiburon report also addresses life insurance in the estate planning context. Tiburon’s first draft of this report was written in 2005; that version focused primary on developing an organized structure for reviewing the insurance industry and establishing profiles of the hundreds of complex insurance companies. This second draft of this report focused on tightening the storyline, coordinating it with findings from other Tiburon research reports, and adding substantial detail to a handful of appendix company profiles (most notably long-time Tiburon clients AIG, Genworth Financial, and Manulife), as well as some other key players (e.g., Aviva).
Target Markets & Marketing Strategies The purpose of this report is to provide readers with a broad understanding of the vast number of potential consumer segments and the wide range of potential marketing strategies available to reach these consumers. The report outlines dozens of potential target markets, including those defined by age, investable assets, other wealth measures, demographic characteristics, and behaviors. The report then goes on to discuss the range of potential marketing strategies, including client consolidation, client referrals, professional referrals, seminar programs, & public relations strategies. Tiburon’s first draft of this report was published in 2005. That draft was combined with Tiburon’s consumer wealth, liquefaction, & retirement income challenge report. It outlined consumers, their wealth, potential target markets, and marketing strategies. This second draft of this report was written in 2007; it is now unbundled from Tiburon’s equally good consumer wealth, liquefaction, & retirement income challenge report. This version updates data surrounding both the target markets and the potential marketing strategies, and makes the case for the need for target marketing in an increasingly competitive playing field in serving high net worth consumers. State of the Investment & Wealth Management Products & Services Businesses The purpose of this report is to provide readers with a broad understanding of the vast array of investment & wealth management products & services offered in the management of consumer wealth. This report serves to summarize Tiburon’s views on various product & services markets, including cash savings products, mutual funds, capital markets, separately managed accounts & other fee-account programs, wealth management services, and family office services. This is Tiburon’s first draft of this report. Several of the underlying product industry reports (including mutual funds, separately managed accounts & other fee-account programs, indexing & exchange traded funds, hedge funds, venture capital & private equity, real estate, other alternative investments, insurance products, and estate planning & charitable giving) have also been published. This version of this report was intended to develop a summary of those reports, take into account the impact of the key driving factors (consumer wealth and current events), and try to offer some predictions across the product & services markets. A Comprehensive Overview of the Real Estate Investments Industry The purpose of this report is to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the rapidly evolving and increasingly volatile real estate investments industry. The report addresses the range of real estate investment options, their markets & distribution channels, and predictions for their future use.
Tiburon originally published a broad report in 1999 that addressed hedge funds, venture capital & private equity, real estate, and all other alterative investments. Both hedge funds, and venture capital & private equity were previously reorganized into comprehensive reports on their own, and this report is the same attempt for the real estate investments industry. This second draft of this report, written in 2007, focuses on tightening the storyline, updating & reconciling data, and beginning to build a company level appendix. A Comprehensive Overview of the Other Alternative Investments Industry The purpose of this report is to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the wide variety of other alternative investments. The report addresses a wide range of investment options (from options to structured debt, commodities, antiques, art, & baseball cards), their markets & distribution channels, and predictions for their future use.

Competition & Advice: Predicting the Winning Markets & Distribution Channels The purpose of this report is to provide readers with a broad understanding of the vast array of markets & distribution channels that are seeking to serve the growing number of consumers and their wealth. This report serves to summarize Tiburon’s views on various markets & distribution channels, including retail banks, full-service brokers, discount brokers (online financial services), independent advisors (both independent reps & fee-only financial advisors), other financial advisors (such as insurance agents, CPA firms, & estate attorneys), and several upscale channels (such as private banks, investment banks, and family offices). Tiburon Research Reports Tiburon created a series of research reports to help educate its clients in a low-cost way on a wide variety of topics in the brokerage, investments, private banking, and wealth management markets. The majority of Tiburon's research reports are written for executives at financial institutions; a few reports are written specifically for financial advisors. The financial institutions series contains macro-industry reports that cover topics such as the mutual funds industry, the hedge funds industry, the full-service brokerage firms industry, and the fee-only financial advisors industry. Reports in the financial advisors series are more tactical, including topics such as A Comprehensive Overview of Product Usage, Business Models, & Best Practices of Fee-Only Financial Advisors, and Trends in Succession Planning, Firm Valuations, & the Acquisition Market for Financial Advisors. These ~300-400 page reports follow an easy-to-digest format while providing detailed facts and analysis that aid in the development of an understanding of leading product areas and market segments, including recent developments, competitor rankings, and leading competitors' strategies. The firm attempts to position its reports as reference documents, and not as short-term newsworthy editorials. While Tiburon has been repeatedly told that its research reports are worth much more, they are priced at just $5,000 each because Tiburon believes that the information should be shared widely and that sharing the research will lead to market research & strategy consulting projects over time. Reports can be sent immediately as PDF documents electronically. Bound copies can be printed and mailed for an additional $500 each. Tiburon plans to continually update these reports and publish additional reports in the future; please let the firm know if there are topics that you desire to see covered.
