New Tiburon Research Reports

Tiburon Strategic Advisors, a market research & strategy consulting firm serving a wide variety of financial institutions and investment managers, is pleased to announce the release of two updated research reports on the Mutual Funds and Venture Capital & Private Equity industries, and its first draft of its Management Consulting Industry research report. All three of these reports provide comprehensive overviews for industry executives seeking a historical top down perspective on these products or services, their markets & distribution channels, and future predictions for their respective industries.

Mutual Funds

The $10.8 trillion mutual funds industry deserves an encyclopedic review and this is it. This report addresses data flows, trends in product development (e.g., lifestyle funds, socially conscious funds, mutual funds with hedge fund strategies), pricing parameters (e.g., share classes, mutual fund wrap programs, performance fees), and distribution channels (e.g., wirehouses, mutual fund supermarkets, fee-only financial advisors, independent reps, international markets).

This is Tiburon's third effort at putting its views regarding this huge market into a single report, with each subsequent revision getting more thorough. Tiburon’s first draft of this report was published in 2005; that draft was a relatively quick effort at compiling information on a very large market. The second draft of this report focused on fleshing out the history chapter, adding structure to the appendix, adding significant detail to a handful of large mutual fund companies’ profiles in the appendix, and reformatting the underlying Power Point pages. This third draft of the report focuses on further tightening the story, incorporating research from other Tiburon efforts, and adding significant detail to the appendix profiles of the 300 relatively smaller mutual fund companies.

Two separate audiences should find this report helpful. Executives at mutual fund companies (or other product manufactures like insurance companies and annuity companies) should find this report helpful in determining their firm’s strategy. The report should provide a solid understanding of Tiburon’s perspectives on the mutual funds industry and emerging trends. Furthermore, executives should be able to take away a solid understanding of Tiburon’s views on the potential of each market, allowing executives to focus their distribution resources. In addition, for executives at distribution companies (broker/dealers, banks, & insurance agencies), the report offers details on the mutual funds industry, assisting their firms in determining firms with which to partner.

Venture Capital & Private Equity

Throughout the late 1980s, the private equity funds industry boomed. Who can forget RJR Nabisco and other well-known LBO deals? The funds invested in these LBOs came from what are known as private equity funds. More recently, in the late 1990s, the industry saw a boom in the venture capital market. Start-up companies with limited revenues, and often no products, raised significant funds. These monies came from venture capital funds. In the late 1990s, increasingly both private equity funds and venture capital funds became available to high net worth investors but then the venture capital market fell apart and fund raising slowed significantly. It is now coming back! Who are the leading private equity and venture capital fund firms? What is the role of funds-of-funds? How does a firm build an appropriate product offering for its clientele?

This is Tiburon’s second effort at putting its views regarding these rapidly evolving markets into a single report. Tiburon’s first draft of this report was published in 1999, at a time when venture capital, private equity, and mezzanine finance firms were just gaining popularity with investors. That version of this report was a relatively quick effort at compiling information on this emerging market. This second draft of the report focuses on updating the story and adding structure to the appendix.

Two separate audiences should find this report helpful. Executives at venture capital & private equity firms should find this report helpful in determining their company’s strategy. They should gain a solid understanding of Tiburon’s perspectives on the venture capital & private equity industry and emerging trends. Furthermore, they should be able to take away a solid understanding of Tiburon’s views on the potential of each market from which to raise funds, allowing them to focus their resources. In addition, for executives at firms distributing to high net worth individuals, this report should offer details on the venture capital, private equity, & mezzanine finance industry, assisting them in determining firms with which to partner.

Consulting Industry

The consulting market has evolved through four phases, including its emergence phase, early growth phase, troubled & retrenchment phase, and renewed growth & maturation phase. Federal & state governments and financial services companies are the two largest consulting markets, accounting for over two-thirds of all projects. And the industry is evolving; the final chapter of this report provides predictions for the future of the consulting market in five areas, including rapid growth, dominance of strategy consulting, importance of financial services industry clients, industry focused frameworks to emerge, consulting firms to expand, and continual industry consolidation.

This is Tiburon's first effort at putting its views regarding this market into a single report. The goal in this first draft was to create a structure for viewing the market, to establish initial frameworks for gathering information, to build a basic historical view of the market, and to create initial profiles of some of the leading consulting firms.

Three separate audiences should find this report helpful. Executives at consulting firms should find this report to be a terrific reference document in understanding their market and competitors. They should gain a solid understanding of Tiburon’s perspectives on the consulting market and emerging trends. Furthermore, they should be able to take away a solid understanding of Tiburon’s views on the potential of each sub-market, allowing them to focus their resources. In addition, for executives at financial services firms, this report should offer details on assisting them in seeking to utilize the services of consulting firms. Finally, for financial advisors, this report may be helpful in introducing frameworks that they can employ in their own business, as well as introductions of coaches, whom they may utilize as consultants in their businesses.

Tiburon Research Reports

Tiburon created a series of research reports to help educate its clients in a low-cost way on a wide variety of topics in the brokerage, investments, private banking, and wealth management markets. The majority of Tiburon's research reports are written for executives at financial institutions; a few reports are written specifically for financial advisors. The financial institutions series contains macro-industry reports that cover topics such as the mutual funds industry, the hedge funds industry, the full-service brokerage firms industry, and the fee-only financial advisors industry. Reports in the financial advisors series are more tactical, including topics such as A Comprehensive Overview of Product Usage, Business Models, & Best Practices of Fee-Only Financial Advisors, and Trends in Succession Planning, Firm Valuations, & the Acquisition Market for Financial Advisors.

These ~300-400 page reports follow an easy-to-digest format while providing detailed facts and analysis that aid in the development of an understanding of leading product areas and market segments, including recent developments, competitor rankings, and leading competitors' strategies. The firm attempts to position its reports as reference documents, and not as short-term newsworthy editorials. While Tiburon has been repeatedly told that its research reports are worth much more, they are priced at just $5,000 each because Tiburon believes that the information should be shared widely and that sharing the research will lead to market research & strategy consulting projects over time. Reports can be sent immediately as PDF documents electronically. Bound copies can be printed and mailed for an additional $500 each. Tiburon plans to continually update these reports and publish additional reports in the future; please let the firm know if there are topics that you desire to see covered.
